Steelers Injury Report: Key Updates on Najee Harris and Alex Highsmith Ahead of Week 7

As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for their Week 7 matchup, all eyes are on the injury status of two of their key players—running back Najee Harris and linebacker Alex Highsmith. Both players have been pivotal to the team’s performance this season, and their availability could significantly impact the Steelers’ chances as they look to continue their fight for a playoff spot.

Najee Harris: Managing an Ongoing Injury

Najee Harris, Pittsburgh’s lead running back, has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury that dates back to last season. While he has played in every game so far in 2024, Harris has not been at full strength. The injury report from this week suggests that Harris was limited in practice, raising concerns about his ability to carry a full workload.

This season, Harris has been somewhat inconsistent, which some attribute to his lingering injury. He has 389 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns through six games, but his explosiveness has been in question, with multiple reports indicating that the ankle issue might be hampering his ability to cut and break tackles. If Harris is unable to play at 100%, the Steelers may need to lean more on backup running back Jaylen Warren, who has shown promise but lacks the experience and power Harris brings to the backfield.

The coaching staff remains optimistic about Harris’ availability for Sunday’s game, though head coach Mike Tomlin noted, “We’re managing Najee’s reps carefully. He’s a tough competitor and wants to be out there, but we’ll prioritize his health.”

Alex Highsmith: Groin Injury Sparks Concern

On the defensive side, Alex Highsmith’s groin injury is causing alarm among the Steelers faithful. Highsmith has been a crucial component of the team’s defense, lining up opposite T.J. Watt and forming one of the league’s most feared pass-rushing duos. Through the first six games, Highsmith has recorded 4.5 sacks and 11 quarterback hits, emerging as a key disruptor in the Steelers’ defensive scheme.

Highsmith’s injury appeared late in the previous game, and the Steelers’ medical staff listed him as questionable for the upcoming contest. The nature of groin injuries often makes them difficult to manage, as they can easily be aggravated during high-intensity movements. If Highsmith is unable to go, rookie Nick Herbig or veteran Markus Golden could see increased snaps.

Tomlin was cautious when asked about Highsmith’s status. “We’re monitoring Alex closely. He’s getting treatment around the clock, but we’ll make a final decision based on how he feels closer to game time.”

Impact of Potential Absences

The Steelers will face a tough challenge if Harris or Highsmith are limited or ruled out. With both players representing key pieces on their respective sides of the ball, the team may have to make adjustments, relying on depth and rotational players to fill the gaps.

As the Steelers approach a pivotal stretch of the season, the health of Harris and Highsmith will be a crucial storyline to follow leading up to Week 7.
