As Alabama football finalizes its 2025 coaching staff, Nick Sheridan adds a new title.
As the Alabama Crimson Tide prepares for the 2025 college football season, significant changes have been made to the coaching staff under head coach Kalen DeBoer. Notably, Nick Sheridan, who joined the team in 2024 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, has been assigned a new role for the upcoming season. Following the hiring of Ryan Grubb as the new offensive coordinator, Sheridan will now oversee the development and performance of Alabama’s quarterbacks.
Nick Sheridan’s Coaching Background
Nick Sheridan brings a wealth of experience to his role at Alabama. A former quarterback at the University of Michigan from 2006 to 2010, Sheridan transitioned into coaching shortly after his playing career. His coaching journey includes positions at several institutions:
-
Western Kentucky University (2011-2012): Sheridan began as a graduate assistant and was promoted to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
-
University of South Florida (2013): He served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
-
University of Tennessee (2014-2016): Sheridan worked as an offensive graduate assistant, contributing to the development of the Volunteers’ offense.
-
Indiana University (2017-2021): He held multiple roles, including quarterbacks coach, tight ends coach, and offensive coordinator. Notably, as offensive coordinator, he guided quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to a Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist recognition in 2020.
-
University of Washington (2022-2023): Sheridan coached tight ends under head coach Kalen DeBoer, where the offense led the nation in passing yards per game and third-down conversions in 2022.
In February 2024, Sheridan reunited with DeBoer at Alabama, taking on the roles of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Transition in Offensive Leadership
The 2024 season under Sheridan’s guidance saw Alabama’s offense ranking 22nd nationally in points per game (33.8) and 42nd in total offense (410.2 yards per game). The offense was notably led by dual-threat quarterback Jalen Milroe, who amassed 2,844 passing yards with 16 touchdowns and 726 rushing yards with 20 touchdowns. With Milroe’s departure to the NFL, the quarterback room now includes redshirt junior Ty Simpson, redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, and five-star freshman Keelon Russell.
The addition of Ryan Grubb as the new offensive coordinator prompted a restructuring of the offensive coaching staff. Grubb, known for his innovative offensive strategies, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Alabama’s offense. In this new setup, Sheridan’s focus will be exclusively on mentoring the quarterbacks, ensuring their readiness and adaptability to Grubb’s system.
Impact on Alabama’s Offensive Strategy
Sheridan’s reassignment allows for specialized attention to quarterback development, a critical component given the transition to a new offensive coordinator and the introduction of new quarterbacks. His extensive experience with quarterbacks and familiarity with DeBoer’s coaching philosophy position him well to facilitate a smooth transition and uphold the high standards of Alabama football.
As the 2025 season approaches, the collaboration between Grubb and Sheridan will be pivotal in shaping the Crimson Tide’s offensive identity. Their combined expertise aims to enhance offensive efficiency and maintain Alabama’s competitive edge in college football.
