As of March 5, 2025, the LSU Tigers baseball team is ranked No. 3 in the USA Today Baseball Coaches Preseason Poll. The top five teams in this poll are Texas A&M at No. 1, Tennessee at No. 2, LSU at No. 3, Virginia at No. 4, and Arkansas at No. 5.
In October 2024, D1 Baseball named LSU the No. 1 college baseball program in the nation, completing its ranking of the Top 100 College Programs. This ranking focused on consistent winning over the past decade, especially the last five years, and considered factors such as coaching staff quality, facilities, financial aid, conference dynamics, momentum, recruiting, and player development.
The LSU baseball team has a storied history, having won seven national championships since 1991. They participate in the Western division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and play home games at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
Under the leadership of head coach Jay Johnson, who was named the 2023 National Coach of the Year, LSU has achieved significant success. In his tenure, the team has won 137 games, the third-highest win total in the nation over that span. In 2023, Johnson guided the Tigers to their seventh College World Series title, marking their first national championship since 2009.
The 2023 Tigers led the nation in runs scored (634) and shutouts by their pitching staff (12). They also finished second nationally in home runs (144), walks received (413), hit-by-pitches (143), on-base percentage (.432), and strikeouts pitched per nine innings (11.7). The pitching staff set a school record with 798 strikeouts.
LSU’s 2025 schedule includes 19 games against teams ranked in the USA Today Preseason Top 25, including 18 SEC games and a February 26 matchup with No. 21 Dallas Baptist at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The Tigers are set to begin their regular season on February 14, hosting Purdue Fort Wayne at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
In the 2024 MLB Draft, nine LSU players were selected, including eight pitchers, tying the SEC record for most pitchers drafted in a single season. The 2024 Tigers led the nation in strikeouts pitched with 733 and finished second in shutouts (7), fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (11.5), and ninth in hits allowed per nine innings (7.83). All-American third baseman Tommy White completed his career ranked eighth on the NCAA Division I all-time home runs list with 75 and was selected in the second round of the draft by the Oakland Athletics.
LSU’s consistent performance and strong recruiting classes have solidified their position as one of the premier programs in college baseball. The team’s ability to develop talent and compete at the highest level continues to contribute to their national prominence.
