Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams is using his offseason to connect with his roots in a powerful way. The rising NFL star has embarked on a cultural heritage tour in Ghana, a journey that marks a significant personal and professional milestone.

After a standout 2024 season with the Cowboys, Williams opted to spend part of his offseason exploring Ghana, immersing himself in the rich traditions, history, and culture of West Africa. The trip, organized in partnership with cultural ambassadors and local historians, includes visits to historic sites such as Cape Coast Castle, the W.E.B. Du Bois Center, and several traditional villages.

“This trip means everything to me,” Williams shared in a video posted to his social media accounts. “It’s more than just seeing the sights — it’s about understanding where I come from, connecting with my ancestors, and honoring the journey that made me who I am today.”

One of the most emotional stops for Williams was the Cape Coast Castle, a fort where countless Africans were held before being shipped across the Atlantic during the transatlantic slave trade. Williams described the experience as “heavy but necessary,” reflecting on the resilience and strength of those who came before him.

In addition to historical sites, Williams is spending time participating in local customs. He joined in traditional drumming ceremonies, sampled authentic Ghanaian cuisine, and attended a durbar — a traditional gathering of chiefs and community leaders — where he was warmly welcomed as an honorary son.
