Breaking: Jets to Release Ex All-Pro Kicker

In a surprising move, the New York Jets have decided to part ways with former All-Pro kicker Greg Zuerlein, according to team sources. The decision comes just weeks ahead of organized team activities (OTAs), signaling a potential shake-up in the Jets’ special teams unit as they prepare for the 2025 NFL season.

Zuerlein, 37, known as “Legatron” for his powerful and accurate leg, joined the Jets in 2022 and had been a reliable contributor over the past two seasons. He converted 89% of his field goal attempts in 2024, including a perfect 10-for-10 from beyond 50 yards, one of the best long-distance performances in the league. Despite his individual success, the Jets have opted for a younger, more cost-effective option as they restructure their roster.

This release is part of a broader strategy by head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, who are looking to inject youth and versatility into key special teams roles. The Jets recently signed undrafted free agent kicker Jack Martin out of Auburn, a strong-legged prospect who impressed scouts with his range and consistency during pre-draft workouts.

Zuerlein’s release frees up roughly $2.2 million in cap space, which could be used to address depth concerns at wide receiver or the offensive line—two areas of need as the Jets continue to build around quarterback Aaron Rodgers in what many expect could be his final NFL season.

Fans expressed mixed reactions on social media, with many praising Zuerlein’s contributions and leadership, while others acknowledged the team’s need to plan for the future. “It’s always tough letting go of a guy like Greg,” said special teams coordinator Brant Boyer in a brief media session. “But we have to look at the big picture and think long-term.”

Zuerlein now enters free agency and is expected to draw interest from several teams in need of veteran kicking help. With over a decade of NFL experience and a career field goal percentage north of 83%, he remains one of the most reliable kickers available on the market.

For the Jets, the decision marks the end of a steady chapter in the kicking game as they look to usher in a new era with fresh legs and new expectations. The coming weeks will reveal whether their gamble pays off.
