ESPN report: Jim Irsay, longtime owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, has died at the age of 65.
Irsay was a central figure in the NFL for decades, known not only for his leadership of the Colts but also for his outspoken nature, philanthropic efforts, and deep passion for music and the arts. He took over ownership of the Colts in 1997 following the death of his father, Robert Irsay, and quickly became one of the most recognizable owners in professional sports.
Under Jim Irsay’s leadership, the Colts experienced some of their most successful years. He was instrumental in the hiring of General Manager Bill Polian and Head Coach Tony Dungy, moves that would help build the Colts into perennial contenders. With legendary quarterback Peyton Manning at the helm, the team won Super Bowl XLI in 2007, bringing Indianapolis its first NFL championship. Irsay later oversaw the transition to Andrew Luck, maintaining the team’s competitiveness throughout the 2010s.
Beyond football, Irsay was known for his wide-ranging interests, particularly in music. He amassed an impressive collection of historical artifacts and musical instruments, including guitars once owned by the likes of Jerry Garcia and Prince. His “Jim Irsay Collection” traveled across the country, offering fans free access to rare memorabilia and live performances.
