Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford continues to be the subject of intense speculation following a difficult 2024/25 season, and while Aston Villa has emerged as a possible destination, one pundit believes Unai Emery’s side should set their sights elsewhere.
Former Premier League striker and now pundit Darren Bent has suggested that Rashford may not be the right stylistic fit for Villa, despite his talent. Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent noted that while Rashford’s pedigree is undeniable, his inconsistent form and tactical preferences may not align with Emery’s high-intensity, structured system.
“Rashford thrives on counter-attacks and open space, but Villa under Emery are more controlled in possession,” Bent said. “There are players who would suit that system better. Someone like Pedro Neto from Wolves or even Jarrod Bowen would be a better fit—they offer more in terms of tracking back, pressing, and consistent end product.”
Rashford, 27, endured a challenging campaign at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting that his relationship with manager Erik ten Hag remains strained. With Villa securing a Champions League spot for next season, Emery is expected to strengthen his squad significantly, but Rashford’s high wages and patchy form may deter a move.
Meanwhile, Bent also tipped Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood for a big move abroad. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a successful spell at Getafe, scoring double figures in La Liga and drawing interest from top European clubs including Juventus and Atletico Madrid.
“Greenwood’s talent has never been in question,” Bent added. “He’s shown in Spain that he can perform under pressure and adapt to a different environment. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the big European giants comes in for him permanently.”
United are reportedly open to selling Greenwood this summer to avoid controversy upon his return to the Premier League. The club is expected to demand a fee in the region of £30–40 million.
As for Rashford, unless he rediscovers his top form or finds a manager willing to build a system around him, his future at the top level remains uncertain. With pundits like Bent urging Villa to consider alternative attacking options, a move to Villa Park appears far from a foregone conclusion.
