Just Now: It’s a long season, and we want him at 100% when it counts.”

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will miss the team’s upcoming mandatory minicamp after sustaining a minor shoulder injury, head coach Shane Steichen confirmed on Thursday. While the injury is not considered serious, the team is taking a cautious approach with its promising young signal-caller, especially given his injury history during his rookie campaign.

Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, showed flashes of brilliance early last season before a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 5 forced him to undergo surgery. This latest setback is reportedly not related to the surgically repaired shoulder but occurred during recent offseason workouts. According to Steichen, Richardson experienced  soreness and tightness after a throwing session, prompting the medical staff to hold him out of minicamp as a precaution.

“He’s progressing well, but we want to be smart,” Steichen told reporters. “There’s no reason to rush anything in June. We’re confident he’ll be ready for training camp.”

Richardson has been participating in the Colts’ voluntary OTAs (organized team activities) and appeared on track to take full command of the starting role this season. His development is a critical storyline for the Colts, who are hoping the dynamic quarterback can emerge as a long-term franchise cornerstone.

In limited action last season, Richardson completed 59.5% of his passes for 577 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, while also rushing for 136 yards and four scores. His rare blend of size, arm strength, and athleticism makes him one of the most intriguing young quarterbacks in the league, but durability remains a key concern.

Veteran backup Gardner Minshew, who started much of the 2023 season after Richardson’s injury, is expected to lead the first-team offense during minicamp. The Colts also have second-year QB Sam Ehlinger on the roster, offering further depth.

With training camp set to begin in late July, the Colts are optimistic that Richardson will return at full strength and continue his development without lingering concerns. For now, the team is choosing to prioritize his long-term health over short-term reps.

“We’re just being cautious,” Steichen reiterated. “We know what Anthony can do. It’s a long season, and we want him at 100% when it counts.”

Richardson is expected to undergo further evaluations in the coming weeks, but all signs point to a full return by training camp.
