Chelsea have reportedly submitted a €75 million bid for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, amid growing interest from several top Premier League clubs including Manchester United. According to sources close to the Catalan club, Barcelona are open to negotiating a deal this summer due to ongoing financial pressures, and the Dutch international has already been offered to United as well.
De Jong has long been admired by Chelsea’s recruitment team for his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and ability to dictate the tempo of a match. Despite Barcelona’s reluctance to part with one of their most consistent performers, the club’s dire financial situation may force their hand. Selling De Jong could provide a much-needed injection of funds to help them register new signings and comply with La Liga’s strict financial fair play rules.
The 27-year-old midfielder has previously been linked with Manchester United, especially during Erik ten Hag’s early days at Old Trafford. Ten Hag, who coached De Jong during their successful time together at Ajax, remains a keen admirer of the player and is believed to have sanctioned a move should the opportunity arise. Reports suggest De Jong has been ‘offered’ to United once more as Barcelona look to spark a bidding war between the two Premier League rivals.
Chelsea, however, appear to have taken the lead by formally lodging a €75 million offer, which could rise further with performance-related add-ons. New manager Enzo Maresca is looking to reshape Chelsea’s midfield, with the potential departure of Conor Gallagher and the inconsistent form of Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo
