Chelsea__ A £63 million bid for Athletic Club star Nico Williams, in a bold move to strengthen their attacking options

Chelsea have reportedly made a £63 million bid for Athletic Club star Nico Williams, in a bold move to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. The Spanish winger, widely regarded as one of the most electrifying young talents in European football, is seen as a potential rival to Cole Palmer for a starting spot under new head coach Enzo Maresca.

The 21-year-old Williams enjoyed a standout season in La Liga, contributing directly to 19 goals in all competitions and playing a crucial role in Athletic Club’s successful Copa del Rey campaign. His combination of blistering pace, technical skill, and creativity has drawn admiration from top clubs across Europe. Barcelona and Liverpool have also been linked, but Chelsea are believed to be the first to make a formal bid.

Sources close to Stamford Bridge suggest that the Blues are eager to activate Williams’ release clause, valued at around £63 million, in order to secure his services before Euro 2025 increases his value even further. With the club’s new leadership focusing on signing young, high-upside talent, Williams fits the profile of Chelsea’s long-term vision.

Should the transfer go through, Williams would provide direct competition for Cole Palmer, who was Chelsea’s standout player last season with 22 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League. While Palmer typically operates as a right-sided forward cutting inside onto his left foot, Williams prefers to attack from the left. However, the tactical flexibility of both players could see them rotated or deployed in varying roles depending on the opposition.

A source close to Chelsea described Williams as “extraordinary” and capable of becoming “one of the best wingers in Europe within the next two years.” Maresca is thought to be keen on adding more width and pace to his side, and sees Williams as an ideal fit for his high-possession, high-pressing system.

While Chelsea’s bid has yet to be accepted, negotiations are believed to be ongoing, with the player open to a Premier League switch. With Chelsea set for another busy summer in the transfer market, the pursuit of Williams underscores their ambition to return to Champions League contention and establish a dynamic, youthful core capable of long-term success.
