Giants Make Room for Darren Waller Plan by Releasing Former Commanders Starter

The New York Giants had to rearrange their roster in order to accommodate their plan for the Pro Bowl tight end after placing Darren Waller on injured reserve. Bobby McCain, a former defensive back for the Washington Commanders, was cut before Waller worked “on a pitch count” against the New Orleans Saints in Week 15.d that McCain had been let go. Waller’s promotion from injured reserve was announced by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, and Raanan posted shortly after.

Waller missed five games due to a hamstring issue that kept him out of the game. With No. 12 back, Tommy DeVito, the Giants’ quickly developing quarterback, will have a much-needed roaming playmaker for his passing game.

The Giants intend to use caution when dealing with Waller, 31, despite his ability to stretch the middle of the field and strike from a variety of positions. They plan to restrict his number of snaps at the Caesars Superdome, The Athletic’s Dan Duggan reports.

The return of Waller was bad news for McCain, who found it difficult to establish himself in a secondary that was getting better. However, the adaptable safety had developed into “a core special teamer most weeks,” as Duggan described it.

Waller’s comeback was a blow to McCain, who was struggling to make a name for himself in an improving secondary. That flexible safety had become, as Duggan put it, “a core special teamer most weeks,” though.
