To replace Kamren Curl, commanders are urged to sign a Panthers free agent.

To aid in their rebuild, the Washington Commanders must hold onto every talented player they can, but Jeremy Chinn of the Carolina Panthers should take Kamren Curl’s place should the safety be lost to NFL free agency.

Matt Holder of Bleacher Report has reached that conclusion. This year, Curl is “a ‘do-it-all’ safety, lining up in the box, deep and over the slot,” according to him.

It will be difficult to replace a defensive back with Holder’s versatility, but Holder also pointed out that “Chinn has a similar skill set and plays in a similar role on Carolina’s defense.” Additionally, he is still relatively young—he will turn 26 in February—so the Commanders won’t have to give up too much youth at the position in order to find a worthy replacement for one of their best defensive players.

The Commanders would be prudent to consider Chinn, who shines in a position vital to contemporary defense, if they are unable to retain Curl.

Chinn is the only obvious choice to take Curl’s place in the veteran market. The latter has played nickel and dime back and is just as skilled at safety as he is at linebacker.

In recent years, the distinctions between those positions have become more hazy. In order to generate pressure on the blitz and hit in run support, defensive coordinators prefer coverage-ready players in the box.

Pro Football Culture featured Chinn’s 2022 sack against the New Orleans Saints as an example of his skill.
