Panthers ‘intrigued’ by nontraditional strategy for handling uncertainty in the coaching staff

The Carolina Panthers’ priorities for this season have switched to appointing the team’s next head coach following their second victory of the year.

Similarly, the Panthers are “intrigued” in appointing a first-time head coach with an offensive background to work alongside defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

“Something to monitor in Carolina is the potential of pairing a first-time offensive head coach with current defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero,” says Fowler. “Indianapolis, which retained defensive coordinator Gus Bradley under contract while hiring Shane Steichen, is a company that has found success with this model. And Miami proceeded in this manner with coach Mike McDaniel, who was brought on board in 2022 with Josh Boyer’s continued role as coordinator.”

Among them are Bobby Slowik of the Houston Texans, Eric Bieniemy of the Washington Commanders, and Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions.

Johnson has already declined an offer from the Panthers. A year later, it is difficult to envision him participate in an objectively worse scenario.

The Panthers’ rebuild will take a significantly longer time than initially projected. Despite being one of the weakest teams in the NFL and the favorite to receive the No. 1 overall choice, the Panthers owe that selection to the Chicago Bears.

With time running out with Bryce Young and the Frank Reich risk blowing up in the Panthers’ face, Carolina cannot afford to make another poor head coach hire, a trait that defined the David Tepper era.

Evero has gained respect from the Panthers organization as a result of Carolina’s strong defense this season.

Still, the offense has looked like a sinking fish, largely due to Young’s lack of progress. Perhaps that reality can be changed at last by hiring the appropriate head coach.

“After asking around, the sense is the Panthers are at least intrigued by this idea,” says Fowler. “Evero has done an impressive job with the Panthers’ defense…”
