Huge Update on Nylander’s Trade with the Maple Leafs Provided by Insider
According to Ezoic Elliotte Friedman, William Nylander’s extension might be completed by this coming Monday. The forward and the Toronto Maple Leafs have been negotiating a long-term contract extension, and according to Friedman, the eight-year agreement may cost roughly $11.5 million a season. If this is true, it’s great news for Leafs supporters and a major upgrade for the team. For Nylander, it’s also a significant contract.
The Leafs coveted the player for eight years, so this will obviously be a contentious issue, according to Friedman. It was going to require this. The Leafs will sign the contract now and handle the ramifications later, he continued.
With that amount, Nylander would rank second among wingers in terms of Average Annual Value (AAV), behind only Artemi Panarin ($11.64 million) and ahead of David Pastrnak ($11.25 million), as Luke Fox of Sportsnet notes. It was thought not very long ago that the Leafs might have completed this deal for about $10 million a season. Obviously, that is no longer the case. Nylander is having a fantastic season, which has increased his value and status and forced general manager Brad Treliving to act.
Nylander’s contract extension, if correct, is for a total of $92 million, or $11.5 million year for eight years. Any club considering a contract would have to offer him $13.1 million over seven years in order to equal this total worth, should he choose not to sign it and instead test the market. With that agreement, he would become the second-highest paid hockey player. A team is not likely to travel there.
