Red Sox Will Probably Do “Something Aggressive And Expensive” Soon, According to MLB Insider

Although there has been a lot of conjecture surrounding Boston this offseason, the team hasn’t been able to close a significant deal as of yet. With Spring Training rapidly approaching, the Red Sox still have two significant holes in their roster.

Boston requires a right-handed hitter in the middle of the lineup in addition to a front-line starter. The Red Sox still have time, but there have been rumors that Boston won’t be spending any of this offseason.

Despite this, Buster Olney of ESPN predicted that the Red Sox will soon take action in the form of “something aggressive and expensive.

“Red Sox chairman Tom Werner told reporters his team was ready to go ‘full throttle’ at the time they hired Craig Breslow, and while Boston’s longshot attempt to sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto didn’t work out, there are plenty of other investment opportunities available, from (Blake Snell) to (Jordan Montgomery) to a possible trade for (Dylan Cease),” said Olney. “If the Red Sox don’t make a significant move, Werner’s remarks will serve as the main plot point for their 2024 campaign.

“Breslow’s debut in his new role will be ruined if they struggle in a challenging AL East, as is to be expected; manager Alex Cora’s contract is about to expire, so the team will once more be giving away tickets to college students in September. The Red Sox will act decisively because, as with their lavish acquisition of Rafael Devers, they have no other option.

Boston needs to get a lot done. Fortunately for the team, the Red Sox could find multiple players who meet their needs. Time will tell if the club is genuinely interested in closing a significant deal.
