Following a sequence in Wednesday’s game that left the Maple Leafs defenseman bloodied, Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment has been fined US $5,000 for interfering with Toronto’s Jake McCabe.
The play happened during Toronto’s 5-4 victory in the second period. The blueliner reversed the puck along the boards, and Marchment caught McCabe with a late hit.
After the incident, which went unpunished by on-ice officials, the Leafs were incensed.
Although McCabe needed stitches for the bridge of his nose, Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe praised the player for maintaining his composure.
The Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund will receive the proceeds from Marchment’s fine, which is the highest amount permitted by the collective bargaining agreement and was disclosed on Thursday.
After the game, Keefe remarked, “I see a vulnerable player that’s targeted.” “I have to assume that’s the kind of hit they hope to avoid in the match. Guy needs stitches because he is bleeding all over.”
