Cowboys news: Mike Zimmer, the former head coach of the Vikings, will join Dallas as the defensive coordinator

Mike Zimmer has returned to the NFL, the place where it all started.

NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero revealed that Dallas is selecting Zimmer, a longtime Cowboys assistant and former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, to be its new defensive coordinator.

Along with former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera and former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, Zimmer was among the well-known interviewees.

Long renowned for his ability to lead tough defences and his gritty style of coaching, Zimmer should fit in well as Dan Quinn’s replacement. Quinn led a top-five scoring defence in Dallas for three seasons before moving on to become the head coach of the Commanders.

Evidently, Dan Quinn wanted to bring along more Cowboys teammates to Washington than just Lunda Wells.

The longtime divisional rivals of the Dallas Cowboys, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer, have their sights set on multiple other coaching assistants. This comes just a day after it was made public that the team denied the Commanders’ request to speak with their tight ends coach about a position on Quinn’s new staff in the nation’s capital.Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy deserves recognition for this season - Blogging The Boys

The Cowboys also turned down the Commanders’ request to speak with defensive backs coach Al Harris, according to Archer, who cited an insider. In certain quarters of Cowboys Nation, Harris has been mentioned frequently as a potential successor to Quinn as Dallas’ defensive coordinator.
