Hojlund gave United the lead early in the first half, his fifth goal in five games as he continues to be a key player for Erik ten Hag’s team.
After United defeated Denmark 2-1 and the Dane was replaced in the last moments of play, the 21-year-old later used the occasion to squander some time.
He gestured ‘2-1’ to the Villa supporters as he left the field, and they were understandably not overly impressed.
Hojlund, however, also got into a heated argument with Douglas Luiz, a midfielder for Villa, who had earlier given the home team an equalizer in the second half.
Even though tensions were high at Villa Park, United held on to win three vital points that could determine which teams advance to the Champions League the following season.
Ten Hag’s team is currently six points behind Tottenham in fourth place, in sixth place. If they had dropped the match in the Midlands, they would have fallen 11 points short of Villa, who would have taken up fourth place in the Premier League standings.
Ten Hag said on the club’s official website following the match: “It [the win] was massive.” We’ve won big with this.
“Our goal for today was to get closer, and that was unquestionably our objective. And we succeeded.
And I believe that the way we went about it was enjoyable for me; naturally, I particularly enjoyed the first 20 minutes. Additionally, I believe we are dropping a little bit too much when we dictate the game.
“We had our moments in the counter attacks, but yeah, I think then at 1-1, to fight back, we are really happy for today.”
