All offseason, Boston Red Sox supporters have been begging team owners to take the actions they said they would.
Pitching was meant to be the first priority. The organization told players and fans that they planned to compete and climb out of the American League East basement this upcoming season. There were to be minimal budgetary constraints.
As Red Sox Nation is all too aware, the team’s situation hasn’t improved much, and despite all of those assurances, it might even be worse than its disappointing performance in the previous season.
The Red Sox’s predicament has gotten so bad that even players, the most notable of whom is Rafael Devers, the team’s highest-paid player and face of the franchise, are speaking out about it.
“Everyone is aware of our needs. You are aware of our needs. Through a translator, Devers stated, “They are aware of what we require. In addition, Devers stated, “There are some things that I can’t say,” which was probably a result of his annoyance.
Naturally, “they” refers to the front office. Devers continued by saying that, to no result, he has even discussed the club’s needs with the front office.
It is understandable why Devers has spoken up. The Red Sox offered him a 10-year, $313.5 million contract last season, which he might have turned down if he had known what lay ahead. Devers signed a professional contract with the Red Sox, only to finish last for three seasons in a row.
Regarding the treatment of this Red Sox team, statements have been made by other current and even former players. Kenley Jansen acknowledged that he was “frustrated” by the team.
