Surprise trade between the New York Yankees and New York Mets floated by prominent MLB insider

Before the MLB trade deadline on July 30, may the New York Yankees and New York Mets pull off an unexpected trade? It was recently advised by a prominent MLB insider to bring back a former Pinstripe for the last stretch of the season.

Heading into the MLB games today, the Mets and Yankees seasons are heading in very different directions. The Bronx Bombers are in first place in the American League East and have the third-best overall record in the current MLB standings. Unfortunately for the Amazin’s, they are near the bottom of the National League East and overall standings.

The 2024 MLB trade deadline is still a couple of months away but there has already been a lot of speculation surrounding what both teams could do in July. Unsurprisingly, the Mets are expected to be sellers if they can’t turn things around, while the Yankees will be looking for the final pieces of a World Series-winning recipe. And one prominent league insider believes the two rival teams may end up working together before July 30.

“[Luis] Severino signed a one-year, $13 million deal in the hope of having a bounce-back season before reentering the free agent market — and anyway, if the Mets conduct business as they did last summer with Max Scherzer, they might prefer to pay off the player’s salary in return for a better prospect package,” ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote on Tuesday. “And having spent his entire career in New York, he’s got big-market and playoff experience, which would make him a possible fit for a wider range of teams — including the New York Yankees, if they incur some injuries.”

After posting a 6.55 ERA in 19 appearances during a career-worst season in 2023 for the Yankees, Severino has had a far better year in 2024 for the Mets. He has been one of the few bright spots for them this season as he’s slashed his ERA in half and should have a better record than 2-2. But New York’s poor hitting and issues in the ninth inning of games have hurt him.
