Orlando Pirates are looking for a new assistant coach, who can help them get closer to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Jose Riveiro will need a new right-hand man next season, with the club announcing Sergio Almenara’s departure.

Almenara had been his countryman Riveiro’s assistant since arriving at Pirates, along side Mandla Ncikazi. He has now left with 4 trophies. On the other side, Ncikazi has further committed to the club with a new deal. Now according to Soccer-Laduma, there has been a bit of talk that he could be joined by another local coach.

PIRATES LOOKING FOR ASSISTANT COACH

This being the very experienced coach Steve Komphela. If Pirates are looking to challenge Sundowns, then who better than he to help. The former Bafana Bafana coach spent three seasons at Masandawana and will know the ins and outs of Rulani Mokwena. For what it’s worth, he also spent three-years as head coach at Kaizer Chiefs, so will have an idea of operations at Naturena as well.

“According to sources, Riveiro will be expected to decide in the coming weeks about the finalisation of his technical team. Meanwhile, rumours have been doing the rounds in Mokoena the fraternity talks that Steve Komphela could be one of the coaches to be considered or the Bucs role. However, Siya sources have indicated that Riveiro will possibly search for his new right-hand man in Europe, with Bucs also set to travel to Spain next month for their pre-season.

KOMPHELA NOT ON THE RADAR?

Having coached Kaizer Chiefs, and after his recent spells with Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows respectively, Komphela is understood to be focused on the Golden Arrows project for now where he has been tasked with improving the team and its players as their head coach.” Wrote the publication,

So as it stands, Komphela does not seem to be on the radar of Pirates. Could things change in the future?
