Sam Greenwood, on loan from Leeds United, was once again left out of Middlesbrough’s starting lineup against Sheffield Wednesday, leaving journalist Graeme Bailey ‘confused’.

Greenwood joined fellow Championship side Boro on a season-loan deal on 31 August, but he has not started any of the Smoggies’ three games since then.

Prior to the meeting with Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening [19 September], the 21-year-old had been restricted to just 32 minutes for Boro.

Reflecting on Michael Carrick’s starting line-up to face the Owls, TeamTalk writer Bailey posted on Twitter [19 September]: “Much better looking XI from Michael Carrick and delighted to see Josh Coburn staring but mystified how Sam Greenwood still not getting a chance, especially with Matt Crooks starting – but fingers crossed!”

Concerning

Greenwood was allowed to temporarily leave Elland Road in the summer window as it was deemed he was not going to realistically challenge for a place in the Leeds side this season.

The fact that it was only a loan deal that was sanctioned, and nothing permanent, suggests the Whites still feel he has a future in West

It will be a concern for United, then, that Greenwood is struggling to get minutes for an underperforming Middlesbrough side.

] Of course, there is still plenty of time for the youngster to beat Carrick, but he will be

If that fails to materialize, it will be interesting to see whether Leeds choose to recall Greenwood at the start of the new year.
