Four days after their 6-2 win over Middlesbrough in the Premier League Cup, Palace’s Under-21s turned their attention to the EFL Trophy when they faced Wycombe Wanderers first team.
There are three changes
David Ozoh, Victor Akinwale and first-team winger Malcolm Ebiowei all replace Justin Devenny, Hindolo Mustapha and Ademola Ola-Adebomi.
Palace started the match brightly and created many opportunities early on.
The first of these came from a corner Ebiowei took the corner into the box and Franco Umeh jumped highest to head strongly, although he was saved by Franco Ravizzoli in the Wycombe goal.
Just two minutes later, a long angled ball from Joe Whitworth hit Roshaun Mathurin on the edge of the box and the winger raced towards goal.
He took his shot and it deflected off a Wycombe defender and went wide.
The south London team continued to create opportunities as the first half progressed.
Ebiowei turned to score in midfield and played a perfect pass to Mathurin on the left.
A cross into the box found Akinwale, although his header on target was once again saved.
A late-half scare from Wycombe’s Dale Taylor almost put Palace behind, but Whitworth responded well by turning his shot backwards after it went through a crowd of players.
After the break, the home team gained momentum and attacked from the start, unlike most of the first half.
Whitworth made a routine save, while efforts from Chris Forino and Kieran Sadlier were off target.
In stoppage time, Palace captain Seán Grehan was at the right time and right place to deny Sadlier’s fierce effort in the penalty ar
It looked like the two teams would witness a goalless draw when second-half substitute Sam Vokes hit the post in the 81st minute for Wycombe and saw a follow-up effort Sadlier’s was blocked again by Grehan.

udged to have touched the ball with his hand.
Wycombe number 10 Luke Leahy stepped up and Whitworth made a great save to deny him.
Unfortunately, the Chairboys were given the chance to retake the penalty, as the referee ruled that Whitworth was on the touchline when he made the save.
Leahy duly converted the second request in the 92nd minute, although Whitworth duly pounced.
A unique goal that truly suffocated Palace’s team in six minutes of extra time.
Powell’s side will need to pick themselves up and dust themselves off against Nottingham Forest to be competitive in Premier League 2.
