Blues striker Tawanda Chirewa has joined Wolverhampton Wanderers’ reserve team after leaving Portman Road in the summer after turning down the offer of a new contract.

The 19-year-old was offered new terms in May, with the Blues taking up the option of a one-year extension on his previous contract last summer.

At the time, it appeared the offer was being made to secure training compensation for the Chelmsford-born striker’s years in the Blues academy, and there was little chance of him sealing the deal. We understand that remuneration terms have been agreed between the clubs following discussions over the summer.

Chirewa, who is understood to have signed a four-year contract with Molineux, has made one start in the Papa Johns Trophy and two supporting appearances, one in this competition and one in the FA Cup, with the Blues.

When he made his debut as a substitute for Colchester in the Papa Johns Trophy, he became the club’s second youngest first-team player behind Connor Wickham at 16 years and 31 days.

A number of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, have expressed an interest in Chirewa in recent transfer windows, with West Ham making an offer in the summer of 2022.

Wolves football academy director Jon Hunter-Barrett said the striker had been on their radar for some time.

He told his club website: “It was a game where we were excited to get across the finish line. “We have been following Tawanda for a while now, since he was 16 years old and monitored his progress before choosing the right opportunity to approach and convince him of his services .

“His main qualities are his ability to handle the ball in tight areas and his ability to bring teammates forward to create and score from deep areas.

“As always, with one of our key strategies being to pursue loan opportunities for players at the right time, the departures of Harvey [Griffiths] and Alfie [Pond] and the steady progression of one or two others in the first team, it is important that we strengthen our Under-21 squad to ensure they are capable of competing throughout the season.

Head of British Academy Recruitment Harry Hooman added:
“Tawanda is a player we have loved and followed for a long time, since he was an U16. Although nothing happened at that time, we continued to closely monitor his progress over the past few seasons.

“He is an athletic and talented player, capable of scoring and creating goals. He wants the ball and is not afraid to take responsibility and take risks to make things happen.

“We believe he has the qualities and potential to do well for us in the short and long term. It’s a new challenge for him and we’re happy to see him leave with us.

Town face Wolves in the third round of the Carabao Cup at Portman Road next week, but Chirewa is unlikely to be involved.
