Mario Lemina has told his Wolves teammates to trust the tactical acumen of coach Gary O’Neil.

O’Neil masterminded Wolves’ stunning 2-1 victory over champions Manchester City on Saturday to silence his early-season critics after a four-match winless run.

A Ruben Dias own goal and Hwang Hee-Chan’s winner, either side of Julian Alvarez’s stunning free-kick handed City their first defeat of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Midfielder Lemina told talkSPORT: “After all the struggles that we had in some other games, we were committed in training, and we talked a lot between ourselves.

“We wanted to have a good performance in front of the home crowd and that’s what we tried to do.

“From the first minute of the game we were all connected, and the chemistry was there. All the fans were behind us from the first minute.

“The thing is if everyone is committed to the tactics then because the gaffer is really good on it, we are not going to suffer so much during the season.

“Because of all the talks that we had during the week and with the gaffer and with the players we were really focused for this game.

“When everything is going in a positive way, like during this game, it looks like that and we are really happy with that.”

Asked if the shock City triumph could kick-start Wolves’ season, Lemina said: “It just depends on us.

“I think we have a really good team and it is about us and the commitment we are going to have every game because the Premier League is really tough and all the teams can beat each other.

“We want to try to build from this kind of games to be like the team we have to be.”

Lemina also had a cheeky swipe at City boss Pep Guardiola, who labelled match-winner Hee-Chan Hwang ‘that Korean guy’ on the eve of the game.

Former Southampton star Lemina said: “I didn’t even watch it, but Hwang is one of our best players, is playing well and I hope he’s not going to have any injuries.

“We do not care about what they are saying, we just care about what we think about our players, and we count on him.

“We all know Hwang. That’s the best thing that we’ve got and he’s one of the best.”
