The Detroit Lions are expecting a defensive boost with the clearance of C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

After two straight losses in three games, defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s medical clearance could be a big help to the Detroit Lions’ secondary, according to head coach Dan Campbell. After being placed on the injured reserve list, Gardner-Johnson—who has been out since Week 2 because of a torn pectoral sustained in the overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks—is set to begin a 21-day practice window as early as next week.

The Lions, currently facing defensive challenges with a streak of allowing 25 or more points in five consecutive games – the longest active streak in the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Information research – eagerly anticipate Gardner-Johnson’s return.

In the two games he played this season, Gardner-Johnson started both and contributed significantly with 13 total tackles and two passes defended. The player, who joined the Lions after a Super Bowl run with the Philadelphia Eagles, was the NFL’s co-leader in interceptions with six in 2022.

The goal is to get Gardner-Johnson back to practice as soon as possible so that he can get back into football shape and be ready to contribute significantly to the team’s defense. Gardner-Johnson received praise from Campbell for his hard work during the recuperation process.
