Today marked the inaugural day on which the Red Sox were able to sign amateur baseball players from abroad.

This provides an insight into the organization’s far-off future.

The Red Sox are anticipated to sign 45 players on Monday, many of whom are still in their teen years, according toAlex SpeierĀ  of The Boston Globe. Vladimir Asencio, a Dominican Republic native who turned 17 last month, emphasizes the large market.

The right-handed-hitting and throwing Asencio plays center field and is touted as a strong defender and solid contact hitter. Asencio has drawn comparisons to former Red Sox prospect Manuel Margot, Speier noted. Margot came up through the Red Sox farm system and has enjoyed an eight-year Major League Baseball career with the San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays.

Eddie Romero, the assistant general manager of the Red Sox who signed Asencio, gave Asencio’s tools a high evaluation.

Romero said to Speier, “We love him in center field.” Although he favors contact over force offensively, he has incredibly sophisticated technique for his age. We adore that he frequently uses all four zone quadrants to spray line drives. He has an excellent eye. All things considered, it’s a rather sophisticated strategy with a premium on strike zone awareness.
