Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has spent the last week working with summer signing Djed Spence to find a more consistent right-back option for the Whites.
Following relegation last season, the Championship newcomers have had a rocky start to life in English football’s second division. And, with their three-year stint in the Premier League coming to an end with a whimper last season, the club has witnessed a massive turnover of players as a result, aided by some dubious loan escape provisions in various deals.
With some 15 first-teamers departing, Leeds were finally able to focus on new arrivals in the final week of the window. And a busy end to their summer recruitment drive resulted in nine players arriving in total to finally justify, to some extent, the “aggressive approach” to transfers promised by new owners, 49ers Enterprises.
Of those that joined, striker Joel Piroe cost the most, with Swansea paying an initial £12 million sum for the Dutch front. Ethan Ampadu joined for £7 million from Chelsea, and the Wales international has already made an impact at Elland Road.
However, it is possible that the arrival of Tottenham duo Joe Rodon and Spence on season-long loan agreements may provide Leeds with the much-needed defensive grit.
Rodon has certainly made an impression in his two appearances. He’ll provide much-needed guile and no-nonsense defending to a backline that’s been all too easy to break down in previous years.
But it’s the arrival of Spence at right-back that has Leeds fans salivating.

Farke expects more from Leeds newcomer Djed Spence.
Since his £20 million move to London in summer 2022, the 23-year-old has seen little action at Tottenham. With memories of his excellent form for Nottingham Forest in the 2021/22 season fresh in his mind – he also played there on loan, this time from Middlesbrough, and played a key role in helping the Tricky Trees win promotion – Leeds will be hoping history repeats itself at Elland Road.
Spence came in for a nine-minute cameo against Sheffield Wednesday right before the international break. Despite his limited playing time, Spence demonstrated what his game is all about: a marauding full-back who likes to attack with speed but also understands his defensive responsibilities. With some believing Ayling’s greatest days are behind him – his contract expires next summer anyhow – Leeds are hoping Spence will be both a short-term and maybe long-term replacement.
Farke has spent the previous week training with his new signing, and a full debut against Millwall on Sunday is a real possibility.

Leeds will travel to the Den looking for their second win of the season, having drawn three and lost only one of their five games thus far.
Farke has lots of alternatives all over the pitch right now, not least in central midfield, but it will arguably be at right-back and what happens with Spence and Ayling that will garner the most attention.
With Spence obviously having no future at Tottenham, a positive impact at Elland Road could lead to the Whites making his loan spell in West Yorkshire permanent.
