Just two Kalen DeBoer UW assistants would lose their jobs as a result of his hiring.

Lee Marks made many trips to the South a year ago in an attempt to persuade Mississippi State running back Dillon Johnson to visit Seattle.

The former running-backs coach at the University of Washington looks to be making a career move there these days, as ESPN reports he is close to taking a similar position at Memphis.

After Rick Mallory, who coached the Tigers’ offensive line from 2000 to 2009 and is currently the Middle Tennessee head coach, Marks would be the second UW assistant coach to work as a temporary hire at Memphis.

Mallory played in the NFL for Tampa Bay as a guard, was named an All-Pac-10 offensive guard by the Huskies in 1983 as a senior, and coached the UW tight ends from 1992 to 1999.

After working for Kalen DeBoer’s staff in Montlake for the previous two seasons, Marks has been looking for a job ever since DeBoer went for Alabama without taking him to Tuscaloosa.

A former running back for Boise State, Marks spent six seasons as a head coach at his alma mater before spending two seasons as an assistant coach under DeBoer at Fresno State. He also filled in as interim head coach during the Bulldogs’ New Mexico Bowl success before moving on to the University of Washington.

His hiring would free up two of DeBoer’s former Husky coaches: cornerbacks coach Julius Brown and co-defensive coordinator Chuck Morrell.

Only two of DeBoer’s former UW assistant coaches—JaMarcus Shepard and Nick Sheridan—will travel to Alabama with him. They will once more oversee DeBoer’s tight ends and wide receivers and act as co-offensive coordinators.

Former offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and offensive line coach Scott Huff left the University of Washington to join the Seattle Seahawks, where they currently hold the same positions; Eric Schmidt, the former defensive coordinator, and defensive line coach Inoke Breckterfield moved to San Diego State, where Schmidt was promoted to defensive coordinator; and William Inge, the former co-defensive coordinator, is now the linebackers coach for Tennessee.
