Youri Tielemans’ crunch conversations with Unai Emery have been revealed, as the Aston Villa star speaks out, and a BBC expert responds.

Alan Hutton, a former Aston Villa full-back, has joined us as an exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll share his thoughts on the hot topics at Villa Park…

Alan Hutton feels Youri Tielemans will have to fight for his place in Aston Villa’s starting lineup after it was revealed that he is concerned about his lack of playing time.

Tielemans, 26, has started just one of six competitive games in the Premier League and Europa Conference League since joining the Villans on a free transfer from Leicester City in the summer.

Tielemans told Belgian news source DH Les Sports on September 8 that he’s already spoken to Unai Emery about his lack of game time since moving from the East Midlands to the West.

“This is not a pleasant situation,” Tielemans stated. “I informed the manager that I had come to Villa to play.” He understands what I’m saying, but for the time being, he prefers to play with his two midfielders from last season.

“He told me that the matches would come one after the other soon and that I would get more playing time.”

“I realise this answer isn’t helping me move forward, but what should I do?” “I want to seize every opportunity that comes my way.”

Hutton feels Tielemans must be patient, train hard, and play well in order to earn a place in the team.

“It’s up to Tielemans to show he’s better than the players on the pitch right now,” Hutton told Villa News.

“It’s up to him to take advantage of those opportunities when he comes on to demonstrate to the manager what he’s asking.”

“In terms of playing a lot together, Emery has a steady midfield, and he doesn’t really change that department too much.” He’s content with his teammates, Douglas Luiz and Boubacar Kamara.

“Tielemans has to force his way in, and it will never be easy.”

“Villa did really well last season, so now it’s up to him to prove he can be a regular starter.”
