In anticipation of the 2024 NFL Season, the Jacksonville Jaguars have signed a former first-round pick.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have moved to the defensive side of the ball by signing Green Bay Packers safety Darnell Savage, after moves on the offensive side of the game, such as signing wide receiver Gabe Davis to a three-year contract. The contract is anticipated to last three years, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, but the total earnings have not yet been disclosed.
Savage, who the Packers selected with the 21st overall pick in 2019 draft, has contributed significantly to their secondary for the previous five seasons. But in 2023, he struggled with several ailments, missing eight games in the regular season. He did not grab an interception and was only able to total 51 total tackles, the fewest in his career.
Savage never missed more than three games in the four seasons before 2023, totaling nine interceptions. When he was a player in Green Bay, he showed himself to be a valuable asset in the secondary. If he can stay healthy, he will continue to show this in Jacksonville.
Savage will be under contract in Jacksonville until the 2027 season and hope to make an impact immediately to reignite his production. For Green Bay, they will have an opportunity to re-structure their secondary and look to free agency for a replacement.
Savage joins a Jaguars secondary that had trouble in 2023 despite the injuries. They allowed opponents’ quarterbacks to gain just under 240 yards per game, ranking them as the 26th best pass defence. Savage’s arrival presents an opportunity for development in the upcoming season.
