Leander Dendoncker has been a “victim of circumstances” at Aston Villa this season but should stay at the club, according to Dan Bardell.
With just 66 minutes of action so far this season, the Belgian is certainly an option for the team rather than a candidate for a starting spot. He has been injured over the summer but is yet to make a real impact for the Villans.
Dendoncker arrived at the club from Wolves for £15m last summer but has been frequently unused as a back-up since his arrival, leading many to believe a move was a possibility. Le Parisien reported on September 1 that Everton was interested in him during the summer.
Bardell came up with the idea of moving the 28-year-old player. With more solid midfield options for a starting position, Dendoncker often enters the fray when Villa are struggling, and Bardell reckons we won’t see his best form at times. there.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said:
“I think Dendoncker is a useful player for Villa but I feel sorry for him. He hasn’t really played yet and if he has, he’s generally played very well.
“He came in against Newcastle last season in Villa’s best performance that I’ve seen from them. He had a claim to play for months at that point. But the problem he’s been having this season is that when he has been coming in we’ve been unsettled.
“I think he’s a really useful player and a good player to see out games. He has extra height for set-pieces and I wouldn’t be looking to move him on, he’s just been an unfortunate victim of circumstance.
