Even though the Sacramento Kings are off to a stronger start than they did the previous year, current NBA Executive of the Year Monte McNair is still working to make his team better.

Shams Charania of The Athletic claims that the Kings “checked in and engaged” regarding Pascal Siakam, a two-time All-Star.

The Toronto Raptors were reportedly approached by the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers regarding a trade for the star forward, who averaged a career-high 24.2 points per game in his final season.

The Hawks and Raptors had heated discussions during the offseason about a Siakam trade, as The Athletic revealed. Over the course of the previous year, the Pacers and Kings have also checked in and engaged with Toronto at various times, according to Charania’s article from Monday.

Charania did connect the Kings with Siakam, but he also made it clear that a deal is unlikely at this moment.

“The Kings’ stronger start to the season—12-8 this year versus 11-9 last season en route to a 48-win campaign—gives them hope that they can develop internally rather than try to compete for the high price of players like Siakam and (original Raptors forward) Anunoby.

In a game this season, Siakam is averaging 20.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists. In the latter part of his four-year contract with Toronto, he is playing alongside Anunoby. As he approaches free agency, the cost of a possible trade probably wouldn’t be as high as it would be if he was under a long-term contract.
