Information Arises Regarding the Toronto Blue Jays’ Alleged Offer for Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani’s announcement this past weekend that he would be joining the Los Angeles Dodgers for a record-breaking 10-year, $700 million contract broke the hearts of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Given that Ohtani was reportedly flying to Toronto on Friday and signing a contract with the Blue Jays, Toronto had to be feeling pretty good about its chances.

Even though we might never discover the Jays’ genuine feelings about it or the extent of their obsession with Ohtani, we are beginning to gather some information.

The two-time MVP himself can only truly comment on how close the Blue Jays were to signing Ohta,ni but according to people familiar with the negotiations, their best offer was on par with the Dodgers’ budget. According to a person with knowledge of the negotiations, the Blue Jays were “right there” with a very competitive offer.

Although the exact amount is unknown, being “right there” with a $700 million offer shows that the ownership of Rogers Communications Inc., which also owns Sportsnet, is likely making a final offer significantly higher than $600 million.

You have to give the Jays credit if they were willing to go over $600 million and close to the $700 million that the Dodgers offered. Toronto, a team that has lost in the playoffs’ wild card round the past two years, seems to be making every effort to bolster the roster.
