After a strong season, a Red Sox target is reportedly looking to sign a deal in Boston’s range.

Before the start of spring training next month, will the Boston Red Sox add a significant player to the lineup?

Given that new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has failed to sign as many free agents as his predecessor did in previous years, it is difficult to see any big-name players signing with Boston.

One bright spot, if there is one, is that some of the remaining free agents want short-term contracts, something the Red Sox seem more eager to fund.

A team other than the Miami Marlins will give Soler two seasons, according to a report published on Tuesday by Craig Mish of the Miami Herald. “He can play here once more if he wants to play in Miami at a one-year hometown discount with a strong average annual value. He’ll be somewhere else otherwise.

Although Lucas Giolito’s contract has the potential to extend to three years under unusual circumstances, there has been conjecture that the Red Sox are unwilling to sign players to contracts longer than two years.Red Sox Target Reportedly Is Seeking Deal In Boston's Range After Strong Season - Sports Illustrated Inside The Red Sox

Soler would add thunder to a lineup in need of some right-side power. Both an impact bat and a noteworthy starting pitcher addition are necessary for the Red Sox to have any chance of contending in the upcoming season, though the latter seems doubtful at this point.

It could be as easy as bringing in Soler and then investing heavily in Jordan Montgomery, but the incompetent Red Sox ownership group wouldn’t understand that.
