After acquiring veteran point guard Kyle Lowry last week, the Philadelphia 76ers had two open roster spots going into the NBA All-Star break. For now, there is just one of them.
The signing of Darius Bazley indicates that the Sixers are thinking long-term about their roster spots.
The No. 23 overall selection in the 2019 NBA draft, Darius Bazley, was signed by the Sixers to a 10-day contract on Tuesday, the team announced. Throughout his 18 games this season, he has averaged 20.1 points on 47.3% shooting, 9.3 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 33.6 minutes per game with the Sixers’ G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.
The Sixers were somewhat forced to act by NBA regulations. The Sixers have been down to 12 or 13 players since the trade deadline on February 8. Teams are only permitted to have fewer than 14 players (excluding players on two-way contracts) for a maximum of two weeks at a time. By Thursday, they had to get someone signed to a contract that would at least last 10 days, if not the entire season.
