ALLEN PARK — According to his agency, Chase Lucas is leaving the Detroit Lions after two seasons to sign a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
During the previous season, the 2022 seventh-round pick played in 12 games for the Lions, where he earned 260 plays and a significant role on special teams.
Only six defensive snaps were recorded by Lucas while he was with Detroit. However, he might be the 49ers’ backup nickelback and could be a strong contender for a big special teams role. In restricted free agency, the 27-year-old was not offered a new contract and was free to sign with any team. Being from Arizona, Lucas attended Arizona State for his college career. This transfer will bring him closer to his home state.
Over the past few weeks, the Lions have been rearranging pieces on Dave Fipp’s special teams squad. Jalen Reeves-Maybin became the league’s best pair core special teams player as a result. However, Lucas and Anthony Pittman from that unit are also gone for the Lions.
They kept Khalil Dorsey, who can cover Lucas’s duty during that period and adds return ability. In that stage of the game, Malcolm Rodriguez showed himself to be a player to keep an eye on as a possible game-changer.
